In this week’s reading and lesson, we learned about the expansion of first Spain and then the United States. The one constant here were the people living in territories stretching from Florida to California. The Spanish had made their imprint on the people, and created a Hispanic population, while Americans arrived and soon changed the allegiance of these territories.

The Spanish came and imprinted their society, their culture, and their genes on the native people. This creates a Hispanic culture, part Spanish, part Native American, but something different than Spanish or Native American.

For the initial post, examine the plight of the average Hispanic citizen in one of these territories that flipped allegiances.

  • Pick a region that the United States obtained from Spain or Mexico, such as Florida or Texas
  • Then, give a one paragraph account on the territory’s journey from Native American held land to part of the United States, with any allegiances in between.
  • Next, detail some of the challenges Hispanic residents of this territory had once it became American.
