Opioid use in adolescents

  • The opioid epidemic among adolescent youths has been on a gradual increasing trend in the recent past. The opioid exposure is related to dependence, tolerance and addiction which impact the lives of users adversely.
  • In the US, eighty percent of the heroin users attest to prior opioid medication use for nonmedical purposes. The progression of the condition begins with recreational use of the drugs, intensified drug use, and dependence and finally addiction.
  • The management of opioid exposure among adolescents and children offers new challenges and barriers while providing new opportunities for prevention and reducing exposure. (Mauro et al., 2022)
  • Developmental needs for adolescents necessitates tailoring of interventions to meet their needs. Also, the opioid use history is shorter in adolescents, thus, interventions may have more significant results and medical complications and comorbidities such as psychiatric problems may be averted.
